Stratigraphy
Formation: | Waldron Shale
Stratigraphic resolution: | group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Unit 5 (from bottom) of Frest (1977), which is one of five units within the basal 1 m of the Waldron. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | pyritic calcareous mudstone
Includes fossils? | Y | ||
Lithology description: "Sparsely fossiliferous. The common lithology is a mudstone with between 5-20% skeletal debris. Finely disseminated pyrite and small pyrite nodules and crystal clusters..." Fig 45.3 indicates calcareous shale and siltstone for this community.q
Environment: | deep subtidal shelf | Tectonic setting: | cratonic basin |
Geology comments: "Echinoderms are usually cups or calices..occasionally complete crowns...holdfasts common...no thickets...dissociated plates and other large debris not common, rarely concentrated into winnowed horizons, and generally abraded. Graptolites moderately common, finely disseminated carbonaceous matter present in small amounts...likely mid to outer Ba 4, only infrequently disturbed by storms. The low diversity is likely due to the very soft and relatively rapidly accumulating substrate..."
