Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | lithified "limestone" |
Lithology description: About 60 metres of pelites and limestones crop out in a narrow creek. Just below the measured section a few metres of poorly exposed sandstones and shales belonging to the Valbertad Fm. yield brachiopods, bryozoans and rare echinoderms. The section consists of about 45 m of black shales with interbedded levels and lenses of limestone, belonging to the Nölbling Fm. Limestones are relatively abundant in the lowermost part of the section; Then, after about 7 m of poorly exposed pelites, a few metres of shales and limestones intercalations occur. The pelitic content increase in the central part of the section, where black shales are the only lithology present for more than 20 m. A few tectonic disruptions occur in that part of the section, result in offset and/or shortening, although is impossible to evaluate in the field due to poor outcrop conditions. However, biostratigraphic data (see below) indicate the presence of at least three repetitions. Limestones re-occur at 35 m and became more abundant in the upper part of the section (40-43 m from the base). Above, after an interval of about 10 m that is not exposed, 3.2 m of light gray wackestones-packstones of the Alticola Fm. are present. | |
