Stratigraphy
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: The concretion was not collected in situ, but found on the beach at the foot of the large outcrop at Bluecliff. The rocks are entirely Kapitean in age. There are no other exposures of Tertiary rocks for at least 1 mile in any direction. Seacliff exposures further to the east and south-west of Bluecliff are also of Kapitean age (Fleming, 1955). Thus there can be no doubt that the concretion containing Aturia is of Kapitean age.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:concretionary lithified siltstone
Environment:offshore
Geology comments: The fauna and the extreme scarcity of macrofossils indicate a probable outer neritic or upper bathyal environment for the deposition of the siltstone at Bluecliff.
