Time
Period: | Paleogene | Epoch: | Eocene |
Key time interval: | Middle Eocene - Late/Upper Eocene | Pollen zone: | Lower Nothofagidites asperus |
Age range of interval: | 47.80000 - 33.90000 m.y. ago |
Stratigraphy
Stratigraphy comments: The Hasties mudstone was more difficult to date precisely but probably belongs in the Lower Nothofagidites asperus zone. The presence of Nothofagidites falcatus and N. asperus sets the maximum age, while Aglaoreidia qualumis sets both maximum and minimum ages. The remaining taxa have wide stratigraphic ranges, but none fall outside the suggested Middle-Late Eocene age (Stover and Partridge 1973). |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | carbonaceous mudstone |
Secondary lithology: | quartzose gravel |
Lithology description: The plant remains described here come from a carbonaceous mud to slightly lignitic unit, 2 m thick, lying within several metres of poorly sorted quartzose gravel with poorly defined cross-bedding and well preserved fragments of wood (Pole, 1992). | |
Environment: | fluvial indet. |
