Romeriida was named by Gauthier et al. (1988). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Laurin and Reisz (1995).

It was assigned to Reptilia by Gauthier et al. (1988) and Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Eureptilia by Laurin and Reisz (1995).
