Batrachosauria was named by Efremov (1946). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Anthracosauria by Carroll et al. (1972); it was reranked as the unranked clade Batrachosauria by Gauthier et al. (1988).

It was assigned to Anthracosauria by Gauthier et al. (1988).
