Taxonomy

Anseres was named by Linnaeus (1758) [also attributed to Wagler 1831]. It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Anseres by Zittel (1890); it was synonymized subjectively with Anatiformes by Hay (1930).

It was assigned to Anseriformes by Zittel (1890); to Carinatae by De Vis (1892); and to Anseriformes by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960), Brodkorb (1964), Brunet (1970), Cheneval (1984), Livezey (1997), Tambussi (1998), Hope (2002), Mourer-Chauviré et al. (2004), Livezey and Zusi (2007), Noriega and Tambussi (2008), Cenizo and Agnolín (2010) and Worthy et al. (2017).
