Sylviornithidae was named by Mourer-Chauviré and Balouet (2005). Its type is Sylviornis.

It was assigned to Megapodioidea by Livezey and Zusi (2007); to Galloanseres by Worthy et al. (2016); and to Sylviornithes by Worthy et al. (2017).
