Nymphaster rugosus was named by Spencer (1907). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Museum of Natural History, London, holotype BNHM OR 57516.
It was recombined as Trachyaster rugosus by Spencer (1913); it was recombined as Spenceraster rugosus by Spencer and Wright (1966), Breton (1992), Néraudeau and Breton (1993) and Lewis (1993).
