Taxonomy
Pecten virginianus was named by Conrad (1840) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene; Atlantic Coastal Plain.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Pecten (Placopecten) virginianus by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Chlamys (Placopecten) virginianum by Tucker (1934); it was recombined as Pecten (Chlamys) virginianus by Mansfield (1936); it was recombined as Chlamys (Placopecten) virginiana by Gardner (1943); it was recombined as Placopecten virginiana by Hendy et al. (2008).
