Pecten clintonius was named by Say (1824) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene; Atlantic Coastal Plain.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Chlamys (Placopecten) clintonius by Verrill (1897) and Gardner (1943); it was recombined as Pecten (Placopecten) clintonius by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Pecten (Chlamys) clintonius by Glenn (1904) and Mansfield (1936); it was recombined as Placopecten clintonius clintonius by Gibson (1987); it was recombined as Placopecten clintonius by Hendy et al. (2008).
