Pica was named by Brisson (1760). It is extant.

It was assigned to Garrulinae by Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); and to Corvidae by Linnaeus (1758), Wetmore (1962), Parmalee (1992), Mlikovsky (2002) and Clements et al. (2017).
