Galbulae was named by Vigors (1825). It is extant.

It was reranked as the order Galbuliformes by Clements et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Coraciiformes by Olson (1985); to Piciformes by Brodkorb (1970), Feduccia (1973), Feduccia and Martin (1976) and Livezey and Zusi (2007); to Neornithes by Clements et al. (2017); and to Piciformes by Mayr (2022).
