Taxonomy
Zygophyseter varolai was named by Bianucci and Landini (2006). Its type specimen is MAUL 229/1, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cisterna Quarry, which is in a Tortonian transition zone/lower shoreface lime mudstone in the Pietra Leccese Formation of Italy.
