Taxonomy
Anas clangula was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1. It is the type species of Glaucionetta, Clangula.

It was recombined as Glaucionetta clangula by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Clangula clangula by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Bucephala clangula by Burchak-Abramovich and Burchak (1998), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Kilmer and Steadman (2016) and Clements et al. (2017).
