Taxonomy
Anas histrionicus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1. It is the type species of Histrionicus.

It was recombined as Histrionicus histrionicus by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Pavia and Bedetti (2013), Clements et al. (2017) and Watanabe et al. (2020).
