Taxonomy
Diomedea albatrus was named by Pallas (1769). It is extant.

It was recombined as Phoebastria albatrus by Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Broughton (2004), Kilmer and Steadman (2016), Clements et al. (2017), Watanabe et al. (2020) and Watanabe et al. (2020).

Synonyms
  • Diomedea howardae was named by Chandler (1990). Its type specimen is SDSNH 25245/3158-C, a limb element (right tarsometatarsus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is SDNHM 3158C, which is in a Blancan marine horizon in the San Diego Formation of California.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Phoebastria albatrus by Olson and Rasmussen (2001).
