Glyptosaurus sylvestris

Taxonomy
Glyptosaurus sylvestris was named by Marsh (1871). Its type specimen is YPM 526 (=USNM 6523) (left frontal) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming. It is the type species of Glyptosaurus.

Synonyms
  • Glyptosaurus ocellatus was named by Marsh (1871). Its type specimen is YPM 523 (small patch of cranial scutes) and is a 3D body fossil.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Glyptosaurus sylvestris by Gilmore (1928) and Sullivan (1989).
  • Glyptosaurus brevidens was named by Marsh (1872). Its type specimen is YPM 521 (many parts of broken skull and jaws, several short articulated series of cervical and dorsal vertebrae and numerous skull and body osteoderm patches) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Glyptosaurus sylvestris by Gilmore (1928).
  • Glyptosaurus princeps was named by Marsh (1872). Its type specimen is YPM 524 (=USNM 16539) (considerable portion of coalesced frontals, median part of right pterygoid, fragm. portions of both rami including symph. end of left dentary, dermal scutes, ph) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

    It was recombined as Paraglyptosaurus princeps by Sullivan (1979); it was synonymized subjectively with Glyptosaurus sylvestris by Sullivan (1989).
  • Glyptosaurus rugosus was named by Marsh (1872). Its type specimen is YPM 525 (posterior portions of coosified frontal bones) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Paraglyptosaurus princeps by Sullivan (1979); it was synonymized subjectively with Glyptosaurus sylvestris by Sullivan (1989).
  • Glyptosaurus donohoei was named by White (1952). Its type specimen is USNM 18316, a partial skull (badly damaged skull), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Boysen Reservoir (48FR65), which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the Wind River Formation of Wyoming.

    It was recombined as Eoglyptosaurus donohoei by Sullivan (1979); it was synonymized subjectively with Glyptosaurus sylvestris by Sullivan (1989).
  • Glyptosaurus nodosus was named by Marsh (1871). Its type specimen is YPM 522 (frontal, two body scutes, unidentified skull fragment) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Glyptosaurus sylvestris by Sullivan (1979) and Sullivan (1989).
  • Glyptosaurus hillsi was named by Gilmore (1928). Its type specimen is USNM 6004 (greater portion of top of skull, both maxillae with teeth, both quadrates, anterior portions of both jugals, greater portion of right ramus and portions of left) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Huerfano I, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Huerfano Formation of Colorado.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Paraglyptosaurus princeps by Sullivan (1979).
