Lopholatilus was named by Goode and Bean (1879). It is extant.

It was assigned to Branchiostegidae by Fitch and Lavenberg (1983) and Purdy et al. (2001); and to Malacanthidae by Carnevale and Godfrey (2014) and Carnevale and Godfrey (2018).
