Phocanella pumila

Taxonomy
Phocanella pumila was named by Van Beneden (1876) [No type specimen number listed by Van Beneden (1876). IRSNB 1080 Ct. M. 227 is the lectotype (Koretsky & Ray, 2008).]. Its type specimen is IRSNB 1080 Ct. M. 227, a limb element (right humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sable Superieur d'Anvers, which is in a Zanclean offshore shelf sandstone in the Kattendijk Formation of Belgium.

It was recombined as Phoca (Phocanella) pumila by Trouessart (1898) and Friant (1947).

Hafed et al. 2023chin prominence absent or slightly developed; mandibular body flatter on lingual than labial side; all teeth lie in straight line relative to axis of tooth row; p2-m1 double rooted with practically equal diastemata between them; tooth alveoli round except last alveolus of m1, which is laterally compressed; short retromandibular space; ascending ramus rises almost vertically from mandibular body (Koretsky and Ray 2008).
