Gryphoca similis

Taxonomy
Gryphoca similis was named by Van Beneden (1876) [No type specimen number listed by Van Beneden (1876). IRSNB 1081, Ct. M. 217 is designated as the lectotype by Koretsky & Ray (2008).]. Its type specimen is IRSNB 1081, Ct. M. 217, a limb element (left humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Wommelgem, which is in a Pliocene marine sandstone in Belgium.

It was recombined as Halichoerus (Gryphoca) similis by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904) and Friant (1947).
