Taxonomy
Desmostylus hesperus was named by Marsh (1888). Its type specimen is YPM 1395d, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mission San Jose, east, which is in a Serravallian/Tortonian marine horizon in the Briones Formation of California.
