Ceratopsinae was named by Abel (1919). Its type is Ceratops. It was considered monophyletic by Sereno (2000).

It was corrected as Ceratopinae by Olshevsky and Ford (1994).

It was assigned to Ceratopidae by Olshevsky and Ford (1994); and to Ceratopsidae by Nopcsa (1923), Nopcsa (1928), Nopcsa (1929), Huene (1934), Huene (1934), Huene (1948), Huene (1950), Tatarinov (1964), Kuhn (1966), Sereno (1998), Sereno (1999) and Sereno (2000).
