Taxonomy
Polygonodon was named by Leidy (1856). Its type is Polygonodon vetus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Mosasaurus by Zittel (1890); it was synonymized subjectively with Xiphactinus by Schwimmer et al. (1997).

It was assigned to Tylosaurinae by Hay (1902); to Mosasaurinae by Hay (1930); and to Mosasauridae by Leidy (1858) and McDowell and Bogert (1954).
