Lithophaga was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Mytiloida by Sepkoski (2002); to Mytilidae by Glenn (1904), Hertlein and Grant (1972), Vokes (1980), Woodring (1982), Ward and Blackwelder (1987), Lamprell and Healy (1998), Mikkelsen (2006) and Ros-Franch et al. (2014); and to Lithophaginae by Adegoke (1977), Moore (1983) and Morales-Ortega et al. (2016).
