Taxonomy
Tasmacetus shepherdi was named by Oliver (1937). It is extant. Its type specimen is Wonganui Museum, New Zealand, a skeleton (skull and skeleton). Its type locality is Ohawe Beach, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in New Zealand.
