Taxonomy
Neosqualodon assenzae was named by Dal Piaz (1904) [Many authors, including Dal Piaz attribute the species name (Squalodon assenzae) to Forsyth Major, but none of these authors attribute the name to a particular publication. See also Kellogg 1923, p. 7 for a concurring opinion.
Kellogg (1923) states that the type specimen is in the Museo Geologico dell'Instituto superiore di Firenze, Italy. Rothausen (1968) states that the paratype is in the Instituto e Museo di Geologia dell'Universita, Palermo, but this appears to be in error.]. Its type specimen is IGF-4469, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Neosqualodon.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001).
