Taxonomy
Scaphokogia was named by Muizon (1988). It was considered monophyletic by Uhen et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Kogiinae by Cozzuol (1996), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Kazár (2002); to Kogiidae by Muizon (1988), Uhen et al. (2008), Lambert et al. (2008), Velez-Juarbe et al. (2015) and Berta (2017); and to Scaphokogiinae by Muizon (1990), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Marx et al. (2016), Collareta et al. (2017) and Benites-Palomino et al. (2020).
It was assigned to Kogiinae by Cozzuol (1996), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Kazár (2002); to Kogiidae by Muizon (1988), Uhen et al. (2008), Lambert et al. (2008), Velez-Juarbe et al. Uhen et al. 2008 | Kogiidae close to Kogia in size, but whose cranium is longer and less broad; rostrum is long, high and narrow and is flattened like that of Kogia; anterior end is round and broad as in Kogia; base of the rostrum contacts the nasal fossae abruptly and unevenly; antorbital notches are very narrow and parallel to the edges of the rostrum and do not penetrate in the supracranial basin; occiput is stretched towards the back (in lateral view), and does not show the hyperostosis of the alveolar gutter as in Kogia; temporal fossa is much larger than that of Kogia (Muizon, 1988b). |
