Promylagaulus montanensis was named by Rensberger (1979). Its type locality is Spring Creek 1 (Level 1), which is in an Arikareean terrestrial horizon in the Deep River Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Trilaccogaulus montanensis by Korth (1992).
