Taxonomy
Ectypodus hunteri was named by Simpson (1936). Its type locality is Scarritt Quarry, which is in a Tiffanian terrestrial horizon in the Melville Formation of Montana.

It was recombined as Neoplagiaulax hunteri by Krause (1977) and Krause and Gingerich (1983).
