Taxonomy
Pitaria sorrentoensis was named by Hanna (1927). Its type specimen is UCMP 31041, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP loc. 5051 San Clemente Creek, San Diego, which is in a Lutetian marine sandstone in the La Jolla Formation of California.
It was recombined as Pitar sorrentoensis by Givens and Kennedy (1979).
