Taxonomy
Citellus cochisei was named by Gidley (1922). Its type specimen is USNM 10491, a partial skull (portion of a right maxillary containing all the cheek teeth), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Spermophilus cochisei by Hemming (1956), Shotwell (1968) and Kurten and Anderson (1980).
