Taxonomy
Lepus primigenius was named by Matthew (1907). Its type locality is AMNH Rosebud 27, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in the Rosebud Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Archaeolagus primigenius by Matthew (1924), Gazin (1930), Dawson (1958), Macdonald (1963), Macdonald (1970) and Green (1972).
