Palaeoerinaceus horncloudi was named by Macdonald (1970). Its type locality is Monroe Creek (SDSM V-6229), which is in a Monroecreekian terrestrial horizon in the Monroe Creek Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Amphechinus horncloudi by Rich and Rasmussen (1973) and Rich (1981).
