Taxonomy
Canis lagopus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Leucocyon lagopus by Bourguignat (1875); it was recombined as Alopex lagopus by Thomas (1911), Kurten (1968), van Gelder (1978) and Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Vulpes lagopus by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927), Crile and Quiring (1940) and Wang et al. (2008).
