Deinotherium was named by Kaup (1829). Its type is Deinotherium giganteum. It is the type genus of Deinotheriinae.
It was corrected as Dinotherium by Pictet (1853), Lydekker (1876), Lydekker (1880), Abel (1919) and Bergounioux and Crouzel (1961).
It was assigned to Sirenia by Pictet (1853); to Ruminantia by Lydekker (1876); to Dinotheriidae by Lydekker (1880) and Abel (1919); to Deinotheriidae by Bergounioux and Crouzel (1961), Carroll (1988), Codrea et al.
