Phiomia was named by Andrews and Beadnell (1902). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Gomphotheriidae by Carroll (1988); to Elephantiformes by Shoshani and Tassy (1996); to Phiomiidae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Shoshani and Tassy (2005); to Palaeomastodontidae by Andrews (1906) and Sanders et al. (2010); and to Proboscidea by Wang et al. (2017).
