Dilophodon was named by Scott (1883).

It was synonymized subjectively with Helaletes by Osborn (1889), Osborn and Wortman (1892), Wortman and Earle (1893), Matthew (1899) and Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Lophiodontidae by Scott (1883); to Helaletidae by Hough (1955) and Radinsky (1963); to Helaletinae by Radinsky (1966); to Ceratomorpha by Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Tapiroidea by Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Ceratomorpha by Scott (1883), Matthew (1909), Peterson (1919), Troxell (1922), Schoch (1989) and Colbert and Schoch (1998); and to Tapiridae by Colbert (2005).
