Xenicohippus was named by Bown and Kihm (1981). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lambdotheriidae by Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Hyracotheriinae by MacFadden (1998); and to Equidae by Bown and Kihm (1981) and Froehlich (2002).
