Merycopotamus was named by Falconer and Cautley (1847). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ruminantia by Owen (1848); to Anthracotheriidae by Carroll (1988) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Bothriodontinae by Boisserie et al. (2005) and Boisserie et al. (2010); and to Hippopotamoidea by Orliac et al. (2010).
