Taxonomy
Palaeochoerus was named by Pomel (1847). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Palaeochoeridae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Perchoerus by Prothero (2009) and Prothero (2021).

It was assigned to Palaeochoerinae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and van der Made (1997); to Suoidea by Boisserie et al. (2010); and to Tayassuidae by Carroll (1988) and Becker et al. (2010).
