Taxonomy
Palaeochoerus was named by Pomel (1847). It is not extant. Its type is Palaeochoerus typus. It is the type genus of Palaeochoeridae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Perchoerus by Prothero (2009).

It was assigned to Tayassuidae by Carroll (1988); to Palaeochoerinae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and van der Made (1997); and to Suoidea by Boisserie et al. (2010).
