Parahyus was named by Marsh (1876). Its type is Parahyus vagus.
It was assigned to Achaenodontinae by Hay (1902); to Achaenodontidae by Peterson (1919); to Helohyinae by Gazin (1955), Carroll (1988) and Stucky (1998); and to Helohyidae by Marsh (1876), McKenna and Bell (1997), Ferrusquía-Villafranca (2006) and Foss (2007).
