Zapus was named by Coues (1876). It is extant. Its type is Dipus hudsonius. It is the type genus of Zapodidae.
It was assigned to Zapodinae by Hay (1902); and to Zapodidae by Coues (1876), Kurten and Anderson (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Seymour (2004).
