Taxonomy
Protospermophilus was named by Gazin (1930) [named as a subgenus of Citellus by Gazin 1930; raised to genus level by Bryant 1945]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Sciuridae by Bryant (1945) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
