Zamponiopteron was named by Janvier and Riglos (1986) [A vertebrate possessing paired bony plates, either triangular, recurved on elongated in shape. These plates, presumably modified fins, enclose a series of parallel canals, and their external surface numerous vascular grooves.]. Its type is Zamponiopteron triangularis.

It was assigned to Vertebrata by Janvier and Riglos (1986).
