Pitheculites was named by Ameghino (1901).

It was assigned to Homunculidae by Ameghino (1902); to Abderitini by Marshall (1980); to Abderitesidae by Marshall (1990); to Abderitidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Caenolestoidea by Tejedor and Rosenberger (2008).

Synonyms

Micrabderites was named by Simpson (1932). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pitheculites by Marshall (1980).
