Scymnus occidentalis was named by Agassiz (1856) [year is a guess].

It was recombined as Scymnorhinus occidentalis by Agassiz (1844), Hay (1902) and Jordan and Gilbert (1919); it was recombined as Dalatias occidentalis by Jordan (1907); it was recombined as Gyrace occidentalis by Jordan and Hanibal (1923); it was recombined as Squalus occidentalis by Bigelow (1994).
