Oceanites was named by Keyserling and Blasius (1840). It is extant.

It was assigned to Oceanitinae by Olson (1985) and Olson (1985); to Hydrobatidae by Clements et al. (2017); and to Oceanitidae by Olson (1985), Carroll (1988), Worthy (1997) and Chesser et al. (2018).
