Bathornithidae was named by Wetmore (1927). Its type is Bathornis.

It was reranked as the subfamily Bathornithinae by Hay (1930) and Mourer-Chauviré (1981).

It was assigned to Oedicnemidae by Hay (1930); to Gruae by Lambrecht (1933); to Cariamidae by Mourer-Chauviré (1981); to Cariamae by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Cracraft (1968) and Carroll (1988); and to Cariamoidea by Wetmore (1960) and Livezey and Zusi (2007).
