Taxonomy
Sphenopteris elongata was named by Carruthers (1872). It is not extant. It is the type species of Dicroidium.

It was recombined as Xylopteris elongata by Frenguelli (1951); it was recombined as Dicroidium elongatum by Archangelsky (1968) and Holmes (1982).
